B2 - Mt. Diablo USD - Pursuing Educational Equity with Positive Behavior Intervention and Support
Art Casillas, Cindy Goin, Nancy Klinkner, Katie Koontz, Lisa Murphy Oates, Teresa Stratton, Sean Taylor, and Robin Zahner
Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) began its PBIS Implementation journey in 2014. We began with six schools and then twelve more volunteered to be a part of this movement. As of the 2016 school year, 23 schools in MDUSD have joined the movement toward sanity saving and effective intervention strategies…choosing PBIS as a way to create three-tiered instructional and behavioral supports.
A fun fact about our school district and our school teams is If you mention data, we may faint or develop a wicked case of Tourette's Syndrome! We thought PBIS Implementation would be HARD WORK and we discovered that it is! Moreover, on our journey we discovered that it was more HEART WORK than Hard work so we boldly set forth expectations and school teams to collaborate, discover best practices and discover ways to make learning and teaching fun.

C1 - Columbia Middle School - Building and Sustaining Tier 2 & 3 Systems
Mary Beth Allmann, Daniel Poo, and Gladys Mazariegos
Columbia Middle School began its PBIS journey in 2010. Once our Tier 1 / School-wide Systems were implemented, it was clear that we needed to establish a Tier 2/3 system to address the 10% of our population for whom the Tier 1 systems were not working. In 2012, we established our Tier 2/3 or "RtI" team, made up of teachers, school psychologist, social worker, administrators, and instructional coach. This team developed a system to identify Tier 2/3 students, assign interventions, and monitor progress. As a result, our referrals have decreased, and our academic and school connectedness scores have increased.
